Stonefly hatch has commenced on the Pecos River

The beauty of living fifty yards from the Pecos River is that I get to see the changes as they’re happening. Usually, as the weather improves and I spend my time outdoors, I get down to the river to check things out on a several-times daily basis. Two days ago in the mid-morning, Sunday May 23rd, I saw my first stonefly of the year fluttering around like it had just learned to fly. The next day, I dropped a red size 10 Parachute Madam X along a structure next to a pool and a 12″ brown sipped it off the surface. Unexpected and nice. This morning, I decided to check out the banks and vegetation to see how busy the stonefly mating activity was. Got lots of pictures and videos. This is the best activity I’ve seen here since 2010, certainly the best stonefly hatch I’ve seen since the 2013 Tres Lagunas fire monsoon runoff killed off most of the aquatic life. I’ve seen lots of stonefly nymphs for the past several years, but very little adults mating.

First Stocking Report Posting of 2021

NM Game and Fish stocking the Pecos at Cowles

While this isn’t the first stocking report of the year, I had to start somewhere. No stocking on the Pecos River above Pecos on this report, though there was a stocking last week. NM Game & Fish has stocked Monastery Lake. The beauty of that is that Monastery Lake is closed because of Covid and those fish will get a chance to grow before they become someone’s dinner. I hope they become smart and figure out how to resist Powerbait.

NM Stocking Report 6-23-2017 and more

Pecos River flow

Here’s the NM Game & Fish weekly stocking report . Plenty of fish going into the Pecos, but with all the people on the river on the weekends, I expect their are an equal number going home in a cooler.

Runoff is over on the Pecos and flows are down to summer normal flow.

Stoneflies have done their thing on the lower part of the river near the Village of Pecos.  Didn’t see a lot of Salmonflies or Golden Stones down here, but plenty of yellow sallies.  Plenty of mayflies and caddis in and around the water, especially at the ends of the day.

NM Game & Fish Stocking Report – May 5th, 2017

The fishing season is ramping up and stocking is going on all over New Mexico right now. Here’s this week’s stocking report. In the Pecos Watershed they’ve stocked over 2600 rainbows in the main river, in the Mora River at the campground and 400 in Holy Ghost Creek.

The flows in the river have gone up after the snow we got last week started to thaw.  Pecos River flow gage
